Is education a unifying force?

When our government started implementing the Malay Language as the medium of instruction in schools in Malaysia, I thought that was wonderful. At least the schoolchildren would speak a common language. The race barrier will be narrower. I foresee the non-malay bosses would no longer ask the malay clerks to translate their letters. It works, at least most of the non-malay can speak the malay language fluently and can write a good malay language. Unfortunately, the unifying factor is diminishing as time passed by.Why this is so? I used to argue with friends and defend the malay language as the unifying factor in this country. It is not that I am patriotic or whatsoever but I felt that was the the only solution for the people in this country to live together in harmony. Barring any cultural differences, the common language is the only way to understand one another. Alas! what has happened now? Where do we go wrong? Is it our education system has failed to produce a truly Bangsa Malaysia? Or the politician has muddled up our education system or the malay has silently withdrawn themselves from the other races?
